Water treatment in Spain comes of age. After several decades of building infrastructure to provide full access to quality drinking water and a high level of waste water treatment, the economic crisis that started in 2007 brought to a halt the progress made in Spain up to that point.
Although the high quality of the services provided has been maintained, professionals and users are increasingly concerned about the deterioration of infrastructure. On the other hand, more demanding European regulations call for an update of legal and financial frameworks, to address the challenges of 21st century societies.
Efficiency and circular economy must be two cornerstones to guide the actions of decision makers. This way, the water sector can respond appropriately to the consequences of climate change, the great challenge of our generation.
We need dialogue among different public authorities, and a partnership between the public and private sectors. Only then will we be able to unlock the ideas, knowledge and resources required for Spain to continue to be a worldwide leader in water management.
iAgua is organising for the first time the Spanish Water Treatment Conference, CETA2020, on March 23th and 24th, 2020, with the aim of turning it into a major independent discussion forum on this topic, and with the purpose of contributing viable solutions that benefit all citizens.
Within the framework of the Spanish Water Treatment Conference, CETA2020, iAgua will present an exclusive report on the current situation and needs in terms of water treatment infrastructure in Spain. The report will serve as a basis for the design and development of different talks and round tables that will take place during the event.
The Spanish Water Treatment Conference, CETA 2020, will bring together senior officials from Public Authorities responsible for integrated water cycle management. Representatives from national, regional and local governments will share during this unique opportunity their plans for water infrastructure and the investments they will undertake in the coming years.
CETA 2020 will bring together entities that represent business opportunities worth 1 billion euros for next year. The Conference will serve as a reference to transmit the need to increase significantly that figure to political leaders.
To date, senior officials from the following entities have confirmed their participation:
- Department of Environment, Land Use Planning and Sustainability, Regional Government of Madrid
- Department of Land Use Planning and Sustainability, Regional Government of Catalonia.
- Department of Infrastructure and Mobility, Regional Government of Galicia.

To do this, dozens of experts will provide their views on issues such as financing, regulation, the legal framework, public-private participation, managing the water-energy nexus, the role of water in the circular economy or waste water treatment in small communities.
