About the entity

Indian water technology firm VA Tech Wabag (WABAG) has secured a major Engineering, Procurement, Construction, and Commissioning (EPCC) contract valued at 1.2 billion Saudi riyals ($317 million) for a mega seawater desalination project in Saudi Arabia, reports Zawya.

The project, awarded by the Saudi Water Authority (SWA), involves constructing a Sea Water Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) desalination plant with a capacity of 300 million liters per day (MLD), or 300,000 cubic meters per day (m3/day). The facility will be located on the west coast of Saudi Arabia, near the city of Yanbu al-Bahr, south of the Red Sea. The project is set to be completed within 30 months, according to the company's statement to the stock exchange.

The scope of the contract covers the complete design, engineering, supply, construction, and commissioning of the greenfield project. The plant will operate using Dual Media Filters (DMF), followed by a two-pass Reverse Osmosis system and re-mineralization processes to produce potable water.

“We are extremely honoured and proud to secure this mega order from prestigious customer SWA, which will contribute to the ambitious Saudi Vision 2030," said Rohan Mittal, Head – Strategy & Business Growth - GCC, WABAG.

SWA, formerly known as the Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC), oversees the regulation and monitoring of water sector activities in Saudi Arabia to promote water sustainability, a key component of the country's Vision 2030. The organization operates over 40 desalination plants with a combined production capacity exceeding 11 million cubic meters per day, in addition to more than 139 ground and surface water purification facilities producing over 4 million cubic meters per day.
