  • Iraq unveils plan for constructing large-scale power and desalination complex

About the entity

Iraq has unveiled plans for the construction of a 3,000-megawatt (MW) power plant and a one-million-cubic-meters-per-day (m³/day) water desalination facility, reports Zawya.

The facility will be located in the Southern Al-Faw Peninsula, where one of the world's largest container terminals is currently under construction, as reported by an Iraqi official on Thursday.

These two facilities are set to provide vital water and power supplies to the Peninsula, Basra Governorate, and various other regions in Southern Iraq, according to Basra's Governor, Asaad Idani.

“We intend to award two projects before the end of this year…,” stated Idani in an announcement carried by the state-owned Iraqi News Agency.

Iraq's Transport Minister, Razzak Al-Saadwai, who visited Faw Port with Idani, provided updates, mentioning that nearly 76 percent of the port's five main piers have been completed, and the port is expected to be inaugurated as scheduled in 2025.
