Itron, a leader in innovative solutions for energy and water management, has successfully delivered more than one million Cyble 5 water communication modules. The milestone unit was shipped to Severn Trent Water, one of the largest water utilities in the United Kingdom. Severn Trent Water is currently integrating these advanced modules into its water meters as part of its Green Recovery Program, aimed at addressing the effects of climate change and bolstering regional economic stability. The Cyble 5 technology is instrumental in helping Severn Trent Water achieve its objectives of enhancing customer interaction, minimizing water waste, and proactively managing leaks.
The Cyble 5 module is designed to upgrade traditional mechanical meters into digital communication points. This upgrade is crucial for utilities like Severn Trent Water, which are moving towards the digitalization of their water networks. The modules, featuring Cyble’s multi-connectivity capabilities, are linked via a LoRaWAN network provided by Itron’s partner, Connexin. This setup enables advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) functionalities, facilitating two-way communication between the meters and the utility. This enhances the accuracy of billing and streamlines data collection processes. The module’s flexible design, which includes built-in multi-connectivity options, allows it to adapt to complex deployments and evolving field requirements, making it a cost-effective, long-term solution for utilities.
Severn Trent Water, serving approximately 4.6 million households and businesses across the Midlands and Wales, is in the process of installing 400,000 smart meters equipped with Cyble 5 modules. These meters, connected through the LoRaWAN network, will transform into a comprehensive data source, enabling the utility to capture and manage meter readings through Itron’s advanced mobile meter data collection and management system. This upgrade will provide greater visibility of water usage throughout its service area.
Anthony Hickinbottom, the Green Recovery Project Lead at Severn Trent Water, expressed satisfaction with the technology, stating, “We are pleased to receive the 1 millionth Itron Cyble 5 module. Over the past three years, as part of our Green Recovery Program, the Cyble 5 module and Itron water meters have been vital tools in significantly reducing water demand across our region. The continuous flow alarms and hourly data from the meters have allowed us to achieve a reduction of nearly four megalitres of water per day, exceeding our expectations. The technology has proven to be reliable, easy to install, and cost-effective, ensuring the protection of our water supply from the source to the tap.”
Justin Patrick, Senior Vice President of Device Solutions at Itron, highlighted the significance of this milestone, saying, “Shipping over one million Cyble 5 modules underscores Itron’s dedication to assisting utilities in digitalizing their distribution networks, which is key to reducing operational costs and promoting sustainability. We are excited about this achievement and look forward to continuing our partnership with Severn Trent to help them meet their Green Recovery Program objectives.”
