The Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) has reported progress in its Smart Meters Project, with more than 988,000 smart electricity and water meters installed nationwide as of mid-2025, reports Zawya.
According to figures shared on Kahramaa’s official social media channels, the installations include over 528,000 smart electricity meters and 460,000 smart water meters.
The project comprises more than 12 sub-projects and aims to replace all traditional electricity and water meters with digital alternatives across the country. Full deployment of smart electricity meters is planned by the end of 2025, while smart water meter installation is targeted for completion by the end of 2027.
The smart meters are designed to offer various features, such as real-time consumption tracking, prepaid payment capabilities, fault detection, and streamlined billing and property transfer procedures. A mobile application also provides users with access to their consumption data.
These meters are connected to a centralized platform that facilitates remote monitoring, automated billing, and wireless data transmission. This system reduces the reliance on manual meter reading and supports data accuracy.

Kahramaa has stated that the system also aids in analyzing consumption patterns, forecasting demand, and supporting the integration of renewable energy sources. The utility provider notes that the infrastructure enables faster meter provisioning, consumption alerts, system diagnostics, and improved data flow between consumers and the operations center.
The platform is designed to identify and address anomalies, potentially reducing resource waste and leakage. According to Kahramaa, this aligns with Qatar National Vision 2030 in areas related to environmental development and infrastructure.
The automation of billing and monitoring processes is expected to reallocate human resources to technical and strategic tasks and may reduce operational errors.
In the long term, Kahramaa anticipates the project will contribute to operational cost savings, network reliability, and more accurate demand planning in response to population growth and urban expansion.
Kahramaa described the Smart Meters Project as "a landmark achievement in the region’s digital transformation journey," adding that it reinforces Qatar’s efforts to adopt smart technologies in public services. The corporation continues to encourage public engagement with the system, stating that "active participation and awareness are key to maximizing the benefits of the smart meters."
