Major infrastructure developments set to transform Bahrain's Southern Governorate
A series of large-scale infrastructure initiatives, valued at millions of Bahraini dinars, are underway across Bahrain’s Southern Governorate, reports Zawya.
These projects, which include new road networks, sewage systems, rainwater drainage, street lighting, and signage, are scheduled for completion by 2026, with targeted areas including Isa Town, Zallaq, Khalifa Town, and Riffa.
Officials from the Ministry of Works, led by Roads Projects and Maintenance Management Director Hamad Bado and Sanitary Operations and Maintenance Director Abdulnabi Al Kufi, outlined the plans during a recent Southern Municipal Council meeting. The projects draw funding from a mix of sources, including municipal revenue, the Ministry’s budget, and direct government financing managed by the Finance and National Economy Ministry.
“One of our key initiatives is a project to link Hunainiyah Avenue with Al Moaskar Highway, which is anticipated to be finished by September 2025, with 15% of the work already complete,” stated Mr. Bado. Additionally, a new 3.5-kilometer Southern Boulevard Avenue in Khalifa Town, designed with three lanes in each direction, is in progress. “Significant advancements have also been made in Isa Town’s Educational Area, where 93.14% of road upgrades are complete. These upgrades include road widening, rainwater drainage installations, and additional parking spaces,” he added. “Elsewhere, work on major routes connecting Isa Town with Damascus Avenue is 95% complete, and Road 921 is near completion at 99%.”
Mr. Al Kufi addressed ongoing efforts to combat flooding in the Southern Governorate, noting that 14 areas have been particularly affected by rainfall. “Shaikh Salman Highway, near several key intersections, and Wali Al Ahd Highway near the BDF Hospital and King Hamad Highway are among the most impacted,” he explained. To address these issues, 29 projects specifically targeting rainwater drainage are set to proceed, five of which are already in progress, five are in the contracting phase, and designs for the Hawar Highway drainage system are underway as part of the first phase. In phase two, four additional drainage projects are in the design phase, with 14 others under review.
Plans include nine rainwater channels across the governorate, with three under construction, two in administrative processing, and four in the design phase.
Mr. Al Kufi also provided updates on sewage infrastructure, revealing that work is nearing completion on new sewage networks in the Educational Area, expected to finish by next month, with similar projects in Riffa/Hejayat scheduled for completion by December. Khalifa Town is also set to benefit from a large-scale sewage treatment facility currently in the planning stages.
During the council meeting, Council Chairman Abdulla Abdullatif underscored the importance of maintaining momentum on these infrastructure projects, highlighting the need for timely completion to support community welfare and economic growth. He urged project managers and contractors to prioritize efficiency and quality, emphasizing that delays could impact essential public services and development in the region.
