Metro Vancouver has completed the Fleetwood Reservoir project, a crucial development aimed at securing a reliable supply of high-quality drinking water for communities south of the Fraser River. Located at Meagan Anne MacDougall Park in Surrey, the new infrastructure is designed to support the region’s growing population.
The Fleetwood Reservoir, which holds 13.6 million litres of water, is connected to the region's extensive water system, including a new valve chamber and water main from Metro Vancouver. The reservoir is also linked to the City of Surrey’s Fleetwood Pump Station, which ensures water is delivered efficiently to the municipal system. This project, valued at $60 million, came in approximately $1 million under budget.
As part of Metro Vancouver's broader water delivery system, in-system reservoirs like the Fleetwood Reservoir play a key role in providing safe drinking water to over three million residents. The region collects water from rainfall and snowmelt, which is stored in reservoirs in the Capilano, Seymour, and Coquitlam areas. This water is treated to meet strict quality standards before being distributed throughout Metro Vancouver.
The Fleetwood Reservoir is strategically located to support the region’s increasing water demands, particularly during high-use periods as urban development continues. Metro Vancouver’s careful planning and collaboration with local municipalities and community partners helped ensure the timely and cost-effective completion of the project.
In addition to the water infrastructure improvements, the surrounding park space at Meagan Anne MacDougall Park has also been revitalised. Metro Vancouver restored the park by planting more than 2,000 shrubs, grasses, and trees, and added benches to enhance the green space for public use. Interpretive signage provides visitors with information on the local drinking water system and conservation efforts. The City of Surrey is also planning a new playground as part of the park’s ongoing development.
