About the entity

Oman is advancing sustainable wastewater treatment by developing two new constructed wetlands in the arid Al Wusta Governorate, reports Zawya.

Located in Al Jazer and Mahout, the projects aim to provide a cost-effective and eco-friendly solution for local communities, each processing 600 cubic meters of wastewater daily and serving around 4,000 residents.

Led by Nama Water Services, Oman’s public wastewater management utility, the initiative is being executed by Global Chemicals, a specialist in water treatment solutions. The project is part of the Global Wetland Technology framework, with design contributions from IRIDRA and Ecobird. Additionally, Dr. Alexandros Stefanakis, a leading expert in treatment wetlands, is providing external expertise.

The treatment systems incorporate a two-stage process combining French Reed Beds (FRB) and Forced Bed Aeration (FBA). The first stage, a vertical flow constructed wetland, integrates sludge accumulation and mineralisation, eliminating the need for separate sludge management and reducing operational costs. The second stage, an aerated horizontal flow wetland, enhances treatment efficiency and ensures the final effluent meets Oman’s stringent water reuse standards.

In Mahout, an existing but non-functional wastewater stabilization pond will be repurposed into a treatment wetland, optimizing resource use. The treated wastewater will either be stored for reuse or safely discharged according to national environmental guidelines.

Designed to function efficiently in Oman’s hot, dry conditions, these wetlands offer a nature-based alternative to conventional wastewater treatment plants, reducing energy consumption. By harnessing natural filtration and aeration processes, the system ensures high-quality effluent that is safe for discharge or reuse.

This initiative aligns with Oman’s long-term water sustainability strategy, promoting wastewater reuse while conserving resources.
