Orasqualia to build biogas unit at Egypt wastewater plant

ORASQUALIA, the joint venture between Orascom Construction and AqualiaME, has signed an agreement with the New Urban Communities Authority (NUCA) to implement a biogas power generation unit at the New Cairo Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The facility, operational since 2013 as Egypt’s first public-private partnership (PPP) wastewater project, will convert wastewater-derived biogas into renewable energy. The new unit is expected to cover 60–70% of the plant’s electricity demand, approximately 36 megawatts per day or 13,140 megawatt-hours annually.

According to Orascom Construction’s LinkedIn post, the project is intended to optimize operational efficiency, reduce costs, and support more sustainable wastewater infrastructure in Egypt.
