Sacyr Water and Ferrovial, through Ferrovial Construcción and Cadagua, have been selected to expand and manage the Águilas desalination plant in Murcia, Spain. The contract, valued at €51.5 million, will cover operations over four years, with an option to extend for an additional year. Upon completion, the plant will become Spain's second-largest desalination facility, boosting its capacity to process 70 hm³ of water annually.
Awarded by Acuamed, the project will add 30,000 m³ to the plant’s daily desalination capacity, enabling it to treat up to 210,000 m³ of seawater per day. This expansion will place the Águilas plant second only to the Torrevieja desalination facility in Alicante, which is also being expanded by a Sacyr-Ferrovial collaboration.
Originally designed and constructed by Sacyr and Ferrovial, the Águilas desalination plant has been operational since 2013. Its creation aimed to alleviate pressure on Murcia’s aquifers by providing a sustainable water source for agricultural irrigation. Additionally, the plant has played a crucial role in ensuring a reliable drinking water supply for local residents, especially in this water-scarce region that frequently faces drought conditions.
