  • Sen'Eau and TotalEnergies have recently inked a partnership agreement, paving the way for the development of two solar photovoltaic power plants boasting a collective capacity of 20 MWp.

About the entity

In a bid to enhance access to clean water and bolster sustainability efforts, Sen'Eau, the company responsible for operating and distributing drinking water in urban and peri-urban areas of Senegal, and TotalEnergies have joined forces to develop two solar photovoltaic power plants in Senegal.

Under this initiative, two solar photovoltaic power plants will be built in Mékhé and Keur Momar Sarr, with a total capacity of 20 MWp (megawatt peak).

Keur Momar Sarr, located in north-western Senegal, will host the larger of the two plants. The facility will produce 25 GWh, furnishing up to 32% of the electricity necessary for the seamless operation of a drinking water production hub. This is an important step towards sustainable energy solutions, addressing both water and power needs concurrently.

Meanwhile, in the Thiès region, the second solar power station, projected to yield 20 GWh annually, will cater to 32% of the electricity requisites of the Mékhé booster station. This strategic deployment underscores the concerted efforts towards decentralizing energy production, thus fortifying the resilience of critical water infrastructure across Senegal.

The construction of the two solar photovoltaic plants will start simultaneously this year and will enable Sen'Eau to increase the energy efficiency of these two sites and make savings on its operating costs. These projects will also help to protect the environment by reducing CO2 emissions into the atmosphere, informs Sen'Eau on a LinkedIn post.

Moreover, the development of these solar power plants will create around a hundred indirect jobs during the construction phase and several dozen direct jobs during the operating phase for the people of Mékhé and Keur Momar Sarr.

The memorandum of understanding signed by Sen'Eau and TotalEnergies' not only underscores the urgency of embracing renewable energy solutions but also heralds a promising era of innovation-driven progress in Senegal's quest for water security and environmental stewardship.
