The Sharjah Electricity, Water, and Gas Authority (SEWA) is developing a series of strategic infrastructure projects valued at AED 4 billion (more than USD 1 billion) to enhance water security and ensure sustainable supply across Sharjah and the Central Region.
At the centre of the programme is the Al Hamriyah Independent Water Desalination Plant, which will have the capacity to produce up to 90 million gallons of potable water daily. In addition, SEWA is developing three new pumping stations and nine reservoirs with a combined storage capacity of 180 million gallons, located in Al Zubair, Al Badi’, and Al Burair.
The authority is also undertaking the construction of approximately 245 kilometres of main transmission pipelines. Among the first components to advance is an 8-kilometre, 1,600 mm diameter pipeline linking Al Houma to Al Falaj station. Estimated at AED 105.5 million (USD 28.7 million), the project is scheduled for completion before the end of 2025.
This line forms part of a wider 77-kilometre transmission system from the Al Hamriyah plant to Al Falaj station, with a total investment of AED 645 million (USD 175.6 million). Meanwhile, the new reservoirs and pumping stations have been assigned to contractors, with project costs set at AED 505 million (USD 137.5 million) in Al Zubair, AED 460 million (USD 125.2 million) in Al Badi’, and AED 446.85 million (USD 121.6 million) in Al Burair.
The full programme is expected to be completed by the third quarter of 2027, marking a major milestone in Sharjah’s long-term strategy to reinforce water infrastructure and safeguard supply for future generations.
