China’s Shanghai Electric has secured a contract to build a seawater desalination plant in Iraq, addressing a local shortage of potable water, reports Zawya.
The desalination and hydro-electric facility complex will be executed by the Shanghai Electric Company in Southern Basra, following an agreement with the Baghdad government, as revealed by the Basra Governor's office.
Mohammed Al-Tamimi, Deputy Governor of Basra, held discussions about the project with representatives from the state-owned Shanghai Electric in Baghdad on Thursday, as reported by the Iraqi News Agency.
Although the statement did not delve into project specifics, it is noteworthy that the same Chinese company has also been granted another contract to construct a $1 billion power plant in the central Diyala governorate.
