Southern Water deploys AI and nature-based solutions to reduce storm overflows in Whitstable

Southern Water is expanding its efforts to reduce storm overflows in Whitstable through a combination of artificial intelligence, infrastructure upgrades and nature-based solutions, as part of a broader environmental programme.

A key component of the initiative is the deployment of a “smart sewer” system that uses real-time AI to manage flows across the network during periods of heavy rainfall. By dynamically adjusting how water moves through the system, the technology aims to prevent overflows before they occur and ease pressure on existing infrastructure. According to the company, the system is expected to cut spills at the Tankerton Circus and Diamond Road combined sewer overflows by more than 30%.

Operational data from the past year indicates an average reduction in predicted spills of 32% across three monitored overflow points, reflecting measurable progress since the technology was introduced.

Alongside digital innovation, Southern Water is investing over £90 million to upgrade the Swalecliffe Wastewater Treatment Works. Completed works include the replacement of the storm outfall pipe, with further improvements—such as new inlet screens—planned in the next phase. Additional modifications within the facility have already contributed to fewer overflows at Tankerton Beach.

The Whitstable programme forms part of a wider £300 million investment planned across Kent over the next five years, under the utility’s £1.5 billion Clean Rivers and Seas Plan.

Jerome Corcoran, Pathfinder Project Manager at Southern Water, stated: “Whitstable is a priority for us, and this programme shows the scale of action we’re taking. We’re combining major investment with some of the most advanced technology available to deliver lasting improvements.

“By using artificial intelligence to actively manage our sewers, upgrading our treatment works and working with nature to slow the flow of rainwater, we’re tackling storm overflows from every angle. It’s a long-term approach, but it’s already delivering results and it will continue to make a real difference for local bathing waters over the years ahead.”

Complementary actions across Whitstable include sewer inspections, network sealing and nature-based measures designed to reduce rainwater inflow at source.
