Southern Water has announced the awarding of £550 million in contracts to nine companies, a move designed to enhance wastewater removal performance and bolster operational resilience across its service area. The contracts cover essential services such as reactive and planned tankering, grit and screening recycling, general and specialist waste disposal, as well as cake management and spreading.
The combined value of these contracts is estimated at £138 million per year, with the agreements set to begin in 2025. The contracts will run for an initial four-year term, with an option to extend for an additional four years. If extended, the total potential expenditure could reach approximately £1.09 billion.
The companies awarded the contracts include MTS Cleansing Services Ltd, Lanes Group Ltd, Cappagh Browne Utilities Ltd, BioMarsh Environmental Ltd, FGS Organics Ltd, Envirovue (Asprey St John & Company Ltd), Biffa Waste Services Ltd, Countrystyle Recycling Ltd, and ACS (Austin Contract Services Ltd).
“This strategic framework agreement will play a vital role in supporting our business and operational demands and achieve enhanced resilience throughout the next Asset Management Period (AMP8),” said Mike Chapman, Southern Water’s Head of Contractor Service Delivery. “We also have a layered approach to the frameworks contracts, where core work will be carried out by primary suppliers and supported by a pool of secondary suppliers, providing greater resilience.”
These partners will handle a wide range of waste removal services, from emergency call-outs to scheduled site waste management. They will collaborate closely with Southern Water to meet customer service expectations and contribute to the company’s environmental improvement goals in the coming years.
Lanes Group Ltd has been tasked with managing planned and reactive tankering and waste services for Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, and Sussex. MTS Cleansing Services Ltd will handle similar services in Kent. Secondary reactive and planned tankering services will be provided by MTS Cleansing Services Ltd, Lanes Group Ltd, Cappagh Browne Utilities Ltd, BioMarsh Environmental Ltd, and FGS Organics Ltd. Specialist waste services will be overseen by Envirovue (Asprey St John & Company Ltd), while Biffa Waste Services Ltd will handle general waste disposal.
Countrystyle Recycling Ltd will manage planned intersite cake transfers, while ACS (Austin Contract Services Ltd) will oversee biosolids. MTS Cleansing Services Ltd has also been awarded the contract for grits and screenings management.
Southern Water’s investment is expected to significantly improve the efficiency and resilience of wastewater services, ensuring environmental standards are upheld while meeting the growing demands of the region.
