Stantec, a design and engineering firm, has been chosen by the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) to provide support for the California Water Plan Update 2028. The plan outlines water management priorities for the state in response to evolving climate conditions.
Originally released in the 1950s and updated every five years, the California Water Plan serves as a strategic document for the sustainable management and development of the state's water resources. As required by California Water Code Section 10005(a), the 2028 update will assess the current condition and trends of water-dependent ecosystems, available water supplies, and the agricultural, urban, and environmental water demands under various projected scenarios. It is intended to help guide state and local agencies in managing water resources for a broad range of users.

Stantec’s role includes helping define the overall direction and goals of the plan while aligning with California’s long-term water management strategies. The firm will also support DWR’s efforts to engage with stakeholders across public agencies, nonprofit organizations, and Native American communities. Their work will include data compilation, scenario analysis, outcome evaluation, and collaboration with stakeholders, using available data and modeling tools.

Stantec has previously contributed to the California Water Plan over the past 25 years, providing technical support, facilitation services, and assistance with water resources planning and policy. The company has been involved in multiple updates of the plan and has experience with its development over time.
