The Syrian Ministry of Energy signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) on Thursday to strengthen cooperation on water and sanitation projects. The agreement focuses on improving water services and supporting sustainable resource management in several regions, with particular attention to Salamiyah and nearby rural areas in Hama Governorate.
The agreement includes plans to upgrade water infrastructure. This involves rehabilitating transmission lines, building new pumping stations, and installing storage tanks. The project also incorporates renewable energy to support water treatment and distribution systems.
The foundation aims to support both government institutions and local communities by improving access to essential services through sustainable infrastructure. The approach is intended to address immediate needs while contributing to longer-term development.
Ghatfan Ajoub, AKDN’s Resident Representative in Syria, stated that the project is part of a wider program. He indicated that the network plans to implement projects worth more than €100 million during 2026 and 2027, with a focus on providing clean drinking water in multiple regions.
Since early 2025, the Aga Khan Foundation Syria has worked with government agencies on water-related projects. These efforts have increased access to safe water for large numbers of people, reduced reliance on unsafe sources, and lowered costs for households.
