Transition Industries LLC, a leader in net-zero carbon emissions methanol and hydrogen projects, has joined forces with Veolia Water Technologies & Solutions, a global authority in water technology, to advance industrial water solutions for the Pacifico Mexinol project in Sinaloa, Mexico. Scheduled to begin operations in 2028, Pacifico Mexinol is set to become the largest standalone ultra-low carbon chemical production facility in the world, with a daily output of 6,145 metric tons of methanol.
The memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the two organizations establishes a partnership to develop a purpose-driven water strategy for the Pacifico Mexinol project. This strategy, devised in collaboration with Ahome Municipality’s Drinking Water and Sewage Board (JAPAMA), aims to make the site one of the largest implementations of industrial water reuse from municipal wastewater. The approach will utilize Veolia’s cutting-edge technologies to minimize environmental impact and support local water conservation.
The water strategy focuses on addressing regional water scarcity by using a closed-loop system to treat and recycle municipal wastewater rather than depleting freshwater resources. This system will adhere to national regulations and is designed to prevent over 8.5 million cubic meters of wastewater annually from being discharged into the Bay of Ohuira, thereby preserving water for agricultural and community use.
Under the agreement, Veolia will design and equip the project’s water treatment plant with advanced technologies, including ZeeWeed 500D™ ultrafiltration membranes, PROflex™ reverse osmosis membranes, and E-Cell™ electrodeionization. Veolia will also oversee commissioning and startup operations to ensure optimal performance.
Balmore Brito, Pacifico-Mexinol Project Director and Head of Engineering and Technology for Transition Industries, said: “Years of community and municipal engagement has led to the development of a set of purpose-driven design solutions, like our wastewater strategy. The ability to partner with Veolia, a global leader in water solutions, to leverage technology and minimize negative environmental impacts, is foundational to our core values of combating climate change and leading in environmental and social responsibility.”
Anne Le Guennec, Senior Executive VP for Worldwide Water Technologies at Veolia added: “We are very proud to partner with Transition Industries on this transformative project. Our best-in-class water technologies and regeneration processes will enable sustainable methanol production, contributing to the acceleration of decarbonization and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, in full alignment with our GreenUP strategic program commitments.”
Transition Industries is developing Pacifico Mexinol in collaboration with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group. Once operational in 2028, the project is anticipated to produce approximately 350,000 metric tons of green methanol and 1.8 million metric tons of blue methanol annually, using natural gas with carbon capture to achieve ultra-low carbon emissions.
