Uisce Éireann completes €50 million wastewater upgrade in north Donegal

Uisce Éireann has completed a €50 million wastewater infrastructure project in north Donegal, marking the largest investment of its kind delivered by the utility in the county. The scheme is designed to improve water quality, strengthen environmental protection and provide additional wastewater capacity for the communities of Ramelton, Milford and Rathmullan.

The project centres on the new Tirroddy Wastewater Treatment Plant, which now provides treatment for wastewater from all three towns through a single, modern facility. The works also included the construction of pumping stations in Rathmullan, Milford and Ramelton, together with a network of pipelines that transfer wastewater to the new plant for treatment.

According to Uisce Éireann, one of the project's main outcomes is the elimination of untreated wastewater discharges into Lough Swilly, the Leannan Estuary and Maggie's Burn. The utility states that this will contribute to improved water quality, protect surrounding habitats and enhance the area's environmental and recreational value.

Commenting on the completion of the scheme, Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage James Browne said: "Public water and wastewater services are essential to facilitating housing delivery as reflected in our new Housing Action Plan, Delivering Homes, Building Communities. Continued investment is also vital to sustain and improve existing wastewater infrastructure in local communities. Projects of this scale in County Donegal are essential to protecting water quality, safeguarding our environment, and ensuring communities have the services they need to grow."

Paul Fallon, Portfolio Manager at Uisce Éireann, added: "The completion of the Rathmullan, Milford, and Ramelton Sewerage Scheme marks an important milestone for Uisce Éireann and for the communities it serves. This landmark investment will significantly enhance wastewater treatment standards in the area, protect the sensitive waters of Lough Swilly, and provide the capacity required to support sustainable growth and development for many years to come."

The project was delivered by Murphy Group on behalf of Uisce Éireann.
