Veolia and Amazon have partnered to integrate advanced water reuse technologies with AI and cloud capabilities to create more sustainable strategies for data center infrastructure. This collaboration aims to support Amazon's commitment to becoming water positive in its data center operations by 2030, aligning with Veolia’s Green Up program, which focuses on resource preservation, pollution control, and decarbonization.
The collaboration will focus on reducing water usage and promoting water reuse in Amazon’s data center operations in Mississippi, contributing to local water resilience and supporting Amazon’s broader sustainability goals.
The first facility using reclaimed water for cooling will be operational by 2027, marking a major step as the first Amazon data center in Mississippi to utilize this innovative approach. Veolia, a global leader in water technologies, will implement autonomous, containerized water treatment systems that will convert effluent from nearby wastewater treatment plants into cooling water meeting the industrial quality standards required.

Once fully operational, the system is expected to reuse more than 83 million gallons of potable water annually, which is equivalent to the water usage of about 760 U.S. homes. This water would otherwise be sourced from local groundwater and potable supplies. The modular design of Veolia’s water treatment systems enables scalability, making it possible to replicate the solution at other Amazon facilities globally where conditions permit. This aligns with both companies’ goal to promote responsible water stewardship and more sustainable data center operations.

As part of the collaboration, Amazon Web Services (AWS) will continue to assist Veolia in developing AI-driven solutions that optimize processes, improve predictive maintenance, and enhance operational efficiency. These innovations aim to maximize resource usage and reduce consumption across Veolia’s global water treatment network.
