Veolia secures contract to supply desalination solutions for offshore platforms in Brazil

  • Veolia secures contract to supply desalination solutions for offshore platforms in Brazil

About the entity

Veolia, through its Water Technologies & Solutions division, has signed a multi-million dollar contract with Seatrium to deliver seawater desalination systems for two floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) platforms. The platforms, located in Brazil’s Santos Basin, will be part of one of the country’s major offshore oil and gas developments.

The agreement includes project engineering, procurement, equipment supply, and installation services. The FPSOs, designated P84 and P85, will be operated by Petrobras. Each unit is designed to process up to 225,000 barrels of oil and 10 million cubic meters of gas per day, requiring advanced water treatment systems to support operations and manage environmental considerations.

To support oil production, the platforms will utilize treated seawater injected into reservoirs through sulphate removal units (SRUs). The water injection systems will incorporate Veolia’s ZeeWeed™ Ultrafiltration and SWSR Series Nanofiltration membranes. According to the company, each system is expected to treat 1,960 cubic meters of seawater per hour. These systems are designed to remove sulphates and other ions, which can help protect reservoirs and pipelines, and contribute to operational stability.

The project is intended to combine Veolia’s international experience with its operations in Brazil, addressing local content requirements while maintaining technical standards

Veolia states that its technology aims to enhance oil recovery and reduce issues such as well souring and scale buildup, which can impact infrastructure lifespan. The company also highlights that this aligns with broader industry goals around sustainable offshore practices.

The project is intended to combine Veolia’s international experience with its operations in Brazil, addressing local content requirements while maintaining technical standards. Collaboration with Seatrium, Petrobras, and other partners is a key component of the initiative.

Anne Le Guennec, CEO of Water Technologies at Veolia, said: “This strategic partnership with Seatrium exemplifies how our advanced desalination technologies can drive both operational excellence and environmental responsibility in offshore energy production. Through our innovative solutions, we're helping secure vital energy needs while minimizing environmental impact ‒ a perfect alignment with Veolia's Green Up strategic program. We are particularly proud to support Seatrium and Petrobras in the energy sector's journey toward more efficient and environmentally conscious operations.”
