Va Tech Wabag (Wabag) been awarded a €78 million ($82 million) contract by the Lusaka Water Supply and Sanitation Company (LWSC) to develop wastewater treatment plants in Zambia, reports GlobalData.
The project is backed by funding from the European Investment Bank and Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau.
The contract follows a design, build, and operate (DBO) model, encompassing the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) of two state-of-the-art wastewater treatment facilities in Ngwerere and Chunga. These plants will have daily treatment capacities of 54 megalitres (MLD) and 19 MLD, respectively. The EPC phase is set to take 36 months, after which Wabag will manage the operation and maintenance of the facilities for an additional 24 months.
To enhance sustainability, Wabag plans to power a portion of the plants’ operations using renewable energy, including biogas and solar power.
This initiative aligns with Wabag’s broader commitment to delivering advanced water solutions across Africa. Speaking on the project, Guhan Kandasamy, Head of Sales and Marketing (Africa) for Wabag, said: “We extend our heartfelt gratitude to LWSC for their confidence in Wabag to deliver one of Zambia’s largest and most advanced sanitation projects in the recent decades. Through this project, Wabag is proud to contribute significantly to the Zambian government’s mission to enhance water and sanitation infrastructure, positively impacting countless lives.”
