Welsh Water has commenced the search for contractors to undertake a £752 million upgrade of its water network infrastructure, reports Construction Enquirer. This initiative, part of the not-for-profit company’s Water Network Alliance, aims to enhance asset health through a comprehensive programme of customer meter installations, network leak repairs, and general maintenance.
The contract, set to run for up to eight years covering AMP8 (2025-2030) and the early stages of AMP9, will be divided into two main areas. The first area focuses on metering, customer appointment programmes, and water network upkeep, with an estimated value of £400 million. The second area targets mains rehabilitation and pipeline projects, ranging from low to high complexity pressurised pipes, with an anticipated value of £35 2million.
Ian Christie, Managing Director of Water Service, Capital Delivery, and Asset Planning at Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water, said: “This contract is a crucial part of our drive to ensure the continuous improvement of our service to our customers across Wales and Herefordshire.
“We have challenging targets for leakage, interruptions to supply and acceptability of water to our customers and we will only succeed with these targets if we work closely together with our partners in the sector to deliver asset improvement works.
“The scope and value of this work shows Welsh Water’s ambition and drive to deliver the best possible quality of service and value to our customers.”
In addition, Welsh Water plans to invite tenders in October for a separate framework focused on wastewater improvements. The AMP8 Wastewater Networks framework will begin in November 2025 and also span up to eight years. This framework will be divided into four regional lots:
- Lot 1: North Wales Wastewater Network Repair & Maintenance and Network Operating Services
- Lot 2: Hereford, Powys & Gwent Wastewater Network Operating Services
- Lot 3: Southwest, Swansea, Valleys & Cardiff Wastewater Network Operating Services
- Lot 4: South Wales, Hereford & Powys – Repair and Maintenance
