About the entity

Yorkshire Water has embarked on a series of major investments to reduce storm overflows and improve water quality across the region. These projects form part of a £180 million program slated for completion by April 2025, with an additional £1.5 billion planned between 2025 and 2030 o reduce storm overflows and improve water quality.

Yourkshire Water has more than 2200 overflows in its network, and is working to reduce how often they operate to keep rivers healthy, focusing on the overflows that operate most frequently. The three examples below are the latest announced as part of the utility’s £180 million storm overflow improvement plan, which includes increasing storage, sustainable drainage systems (SUDs), reducing infiltration and making small changes to operations.

  • In Sheffield, a £1.4 million upgrade is underway at Cricket Inn Crescent to reduce storm discharges into the River Don. The improvements include rebuilding a combined storm overflow (CSO), upgrading equipment, and increasing the network's capacity to retain stormwater during heavy rain. Once completed, discharges from this site are expected to decrease by 48%.
  • Northallerton is another key focus, with a £445,000 project targeting discharges into Terry Gutter. The initiative involves lining 600 meters of sewer network and manhole chambers to reduce the impact of groundwater infiltration on the network. The work, expected to finish in the spring, is predicted to cut discharges by 63%.
  • In Marton, near Pickering, Yorkshire Water is investing £835,000 to reduce storm overflow discharges into the River Seven. Surface water will be diverted from residential properties away from the combined network via new surface pipework, and wastewater sewers will be lined to reduce infiltration. This project, complemented by water butt installations, aims to decrease overflow operations by up to 15%.

By focusing on the most active storm overflows and with its ambitious investment plans through 2030, Yorkshire Water is positioning itself as a leader in sustainable water management, ensuring a cleaner, more resilient environment for future generations.
