  • Aboitiz InfraCapital partners with Keppel Infrastructure for proposed desalination plant project
The Keppel Marina East Desalination Plant has become a famous landmark that the general public can enjoy. With an innovative design locating the water treatment facility underground, it offers a lush green rooftop for community recreation.

About the entity

Aboitiz InfraCapital
True to our brand promise, we aim to drive change for a better world by advancing business and communities through innovative infrastructure solutions.

As part of its thrust to continue developing smart and sustainable infrastructure solutions in the country, Aboitiz InfraCapital (AIC) is exploring to bring world class water treatment technologies to the Philippines by collaborating with Singapore-based multinational technology partner Keppel Infrastructure.

AIC has submitted an unsolicited proposal to supply the Metro Cebu Water District (MWCD) with 30 million liters per day of desalinated bulk water. It intends to utilize Keppel Infrastructure’s expertise and technologies in building and operating a desalination plant in the province wherein raw saltwater will be treated using the reverse osmosis water treatment technology to produce safe drinking water.

With the proposed state-of-the-art reverse osmosis technology to treat raw seawater, AIC intends to help MCWD to address its current water challenges by offering a reliable and alternative water source that can provide sustainable, safe, and clean drinking water to more Cebuanos.

“Aboitiz InfraCapital is eager to bring to Cebu this leading technology and world-class expertise to help address the city’s huge demand for clean, safe and sustainable drinking water. With this facility that is designed in such a way where technology is in harmony with the environment, we hope to provide Cebuanos better access to water to meet their present and future needs,” said Cosette Canilao, President and CEO of Aboitiz InfraCapital.

Both AIC and Keppel Infrastructure have proven track records for developing and running key water infrastructure solutions that benefit communities internationally.

Aboitiz InfraCapital (AIC) President and CEO Cosette Canilao and AIC Head for Investments Frocks Roque recently visited the Keppel Marina East Desalination Plant in Singapore.

AIC is committed to drive sustainability throughout its business as it pursues innovative infrastructure solutions that carefully take into account their impact to the environment. This is aligned with the Aboitiz Group’s Great Transformation journey and its goal of becoming the country’s first techglomerate.

AIC manages LIMA Water Corporation (LWC), the water service provider of LIMA Estate which is the leading mixed-use development located in Batangas. It has also been commissioned by the Davao City Water District to build and operate the Bulk Water Supply Project which will tap the Tamugan River as a surface water source that will run on renewable energy through a built-in hydroelectric power plant. Both projects will have a Smart Water Network wherein the water facilities are interconnected and artificially intelligent leading to better operational efficiency and savings as well as more responsible use of natural resources.

Keppel Infrastructure provides environmental solutions that contribute to sustainable development and climate action. Keppel Infrastructure is behind the iconic and multi-awarded Keppel Marina East Desalination Plant (KMEDP), Singapore’s first large-scale, dual-mode plant that can treat seawater or rainwater drawn from the Marina Reservoir and produce up to 137 million liters of fresh drinking water daily. It supports Singapore’s water resilience amid volatile weather. With its treatment equipment situated underground allowing for a green rooftop for community recreation, KMEDP has been conferred numerous international awards including the 2021 Desalination Plant of the Year at the Global Water Awards for its innovative engineering design as well as its impressive architecture.
