About the entity

ACCIONA
The water business of ACCIONA concentrates on water treatment and reverse osmosis desalination, a technology in which it is the world leader.

ACCIONA, in collaboration with its partner SkyTL, has developed an innovative platform to predict critical water quality parameters and ensure operational continuity of treatment plants.

The pioneering smart platform is capable of predicting turbidity levels, salinity spikes, red tide events, and other critical elements that can compromise the operational health and continuity of water treatment facilities.

By detecting these events early, it is possible to avoid production stoppages, protect equipment, and prevent supply incidents, ensuring a safer, more stable, and higher‑quality drinking water supply.

This technology was named winner of the company’s internal “ACCIONA Innovation Awards 2025” in North America

The project integrates artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques with multiple information sources (Multi Source Data Together), such as weather data, runoff, precipitation, and river flows entering Tampa Bay.

Additionally, the system incorporates a wide network of sensors and data sources, including satellite imagery, fixed cameras, and UAS (unmanned aerial systems) whose outputs are processed through advanced machine learning models. This combination of data and predictive algorithms provides a comprehensive view that enhances operational reliability and strengthens water security.

Innovation of the year

This technology was named winner of the company’s internal “ACCIONA Innovation Awards 2025” in North America, thanks to the pilot project Early Detection Water Quality Monitoring System, deployed at the Tampa Bay desalination plant in the United States.

Unlike traditional monitoring systems, which only detect variables at intake points, this pilot program analyzes real‑time data from both the bay and open waters, allowing it to predict and notify operators of incidents at least two hours before the plant’s installed instruments. This lead time enables operators to take proactive measures, maintaining efficient, safe, and reliable operation of the Tampa Bay desalination plant.
