Alexandre Branthonne & Mohammed Kastawy discuss Filtralite’s impact on water filtration processes

About the entity

Filtralite
Filtralite® is the registered trademark for all expanded clay products used as filter media that are manufactured by Leca Norge AS in Norway.

Smart Water Magazine and Filtralite collaborated on a pioneering webinar titled Next-Gen Water Filtration: Harnessing Filtralite’s Performance, held earlier this year. This session introduced professionals to Filtralite's innovative water filtration media, developed by the Saint-Gobain group, a global leader in sustainable materials and solutions.

The webinar emphasized the need for advanced, efficient water treatment technologies to combat global water pollution exacerbated by rapid urbanization and agriculture. Alexandre Branthonne, Sales Support Coordinator at Filtralite, opened the session by providing an overview of Saint-Gobain and Leca, a key supplier of expanded clay lightweight aggregates across Europe for water management and infrastructure projects.

Mohammed Kastawy, Area Sales Manager for Filtralite in the Middle East, then detailed Filtralite’s distinct advantages in drinking water, desalination pre-treatment, and wastewater treatment. Unlike traditional filter media, Filtralite’s high porosity offers enhanced efficiency with lower initial head loss, reduced backwash frequency, and extended filter cycles. These features reduce operational costs and resource consumption, making Filtralite an economical, sustainable choice for water treatment facilities.

Kastawy also highlighted Filtralite’s benefits in desalination, particularly in extending reverse osmosis membrane life, reducing biofouling, and cutting back on cartridge filter maintenance. Real-world examples included Thames Water as well as Algeria’s Beni Saf desalination plant, where Filtralite significantly improved water quality, cut production losses, and reduced operational expenses.
