MWSC, the company responsible for most of the water supply in the Maldives, and Flocean signed a unique agreement. The two players are collaborating to implement a proven, groundbreaking subsea desalination technology. Initially, the agreement focuses on kicking-off a feasibility study to use the natural pressure and predictably clean water at large ocean depths to produce freshwater in a more efficient and eco-friendly way.
The goal is to tackle water scarcity in the Maldives and beyond with a sustainable, and more climate-smart approach. The project is a team effort and brings together experts in climate, energy, and environmental science to create a robust solution that can serve as a model for other regions facing similar challenges, aiming to reduce the environmental impact of traditional desalination methods.
By reducing energy consumption by 30-50%, avoiding shallow discharge of toxic brine, minimizing land use and being unaffected by storms, algal-blooms, jelly fish and flooding rains, subsea desalination could revolutionize the way potable water is provided in the Maldives, ensuring water security for future generations.
