The Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC), responsible for the purchase and supply of water and electricity in Abu Dhabi, will oversee the development of a sizeable new desalination plant in the Mirfa area of Abu Dhabi, reports Energy Utilities.
The seawater desalination facility, which according to sources in Abu Dhabi’s utilities sector, will have a daily capacity of 550,000 cubic meters, is to be developed under the independent water producer (IWP) model.
The main purpose of the plant will be to provide water for agriculture and irrigation in the Liwa region of Abu Dhabi.
The source of the news also said that EWEC is working on finalising an advisory team for the desalination plant.
In 2019, ACWA Power was appointed preferred bidder for the US$1.2 billion Taweelah desalination independent water project (IWP), a 200 million imperial gallons a day (MIGD), which is planned to be the world’s largest reverse osmosis (RO) desalination plant. China’s Sepco 3 and Spain’s Abengoa were chosen to carry out the EPC works for the plant.
