Bahrain's Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) has announced that Acwa, the Saudi utility developer, has emerged as the sole bidder for the Hidd Independent Water Project, a major seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination scheme in the kingdom.
The plant will be implemented on a Build Own Operate (BOO) basis and will have a Guaranteed Net Contracted Water Capacity of 11,364 cubic metres per hour, contributing substantially to Bahrain's potable water supply and supporting growing residential, commercial and industrial demand, EWA said in its tender notification.
EWA had accepted bids from Acwa Power and GS Inima Environment for the Hidd project earlier this year.
The authority described the Hidd IWP project as reflecting Bahrain's continued commitment to expanding its desalination capacity through private sector participation and advanced water treatment technologies, adding that the approach is intended to ensure long term sustainability and a reliable water supply for the kingdom.
