AECOM has been selected as a Design Development Partner for Sydney Water, Australia’s largest water utility, in a landmark capital investment initiative set to reshape Greater Sydney’s water infrastructure over the next decade.
As part of its role, AECOM will provide engineering design expertise across a wide array of infrastructure projects — including pipelines, pump stations, treatment plants, reservoirs, and associated facilities. The overarching program is aligned with the New South Wales Government’s vision for a thriving, future-ready Greater Sydney, addressing population growth, ageing infrastructure, and environmental challenges.
“We couldn’t be prouder to partner with Sydney Water on one of Australia’s largest and most critical water infrastructure capital programs to date,” said Beverley Stinson, CEO of AECOM’s global Water business. “We look forward to applying learnings on some of the world’s most complex water programs to support a more reliable and climate-resilient water supply for Greater Sydney.”
Sydney Water’s capital investment program outlines long-term infrastructure and operational strategies through to 2050. Over the next 10 years, Sydney Water’s adaptive plan proposes an investment of about $34 billion. It aims to address the impacts of population growth, ageing assets and environmental pressures at the same time as it ensures economic development benefits are shared across communities.
Mark McManamny, CEO of AECOM’s Australia and New Zealand region, emphasized the value of local expertise combined with global insight: “Together with AECOM’s global water specialists, our Sydney team will apply deep local expertise and a shared commitment to sustainable solutions, ensuring we continue to deliver lasting benefits to both the environment and the people of Sydney.”
With a track record of successful collaboration — including projects the design and expansion of the Sydney Desalination Plant, the design of upgrades for the water recycling plant at Rouse Hill, and the delivery of its formative Western Sydney Regional Master Plan — AECOM is well positioned to support this transformative journey. Sydney Water currently delivers clean, high-quality drinking water to over 5.3 million residents daily, reinforcing the critical importance of this strategic partnership.
