Arcadis has been appointed as Quantity Surveying (QS) consultant for the Macao Artificial Island Wastewater Treatment Plant, a major public infrastructure project commissioned by the Government of Macau, a coastal city on the southern edge of China, west of Hong Kong.
The wastewater treatment plant will be developed on the Zhuhai–Macau Port Artificial Island, a reclaimed area created as part of the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge boundary crossing facilities. The project is intended to strengthen sewage management capacity for the artificial island while supporting long-term environmental performance in the area.
The development will include a conveyance tunnel, wastewater treatment buildings and supporting infrastructure, as well as an exhibition hall aimed at enhancing public understanding of environmental protection and wastewater treatment processes. Together, these elements are designed to integrate technical infrastructure with public engagement on sustainability.
Under its appointment, Arcadis will provide comprehensive cost and contract management services for the wastewater treatment plant, supporting effective financial control and contract administration throughout project delivery. The role forms part of Arcadis’ broader involvement in major public-sector developments in Macau.
According to information released in May 2024, the Environmental Protection Bureau of the Macao Special Administrative Region Government reported that eight proposals had been received for the design, construction, operation and maintenance of the wastewater treatment plant. The announcement indicated that bid prices ranged between MOP 6.1 billion (about US$ 756 million) and MOP 8.2 billion (about US$ 1017 million), with an overall project duration of 63 months.
