Goulburn-Murray Water appoints Steve Capewell as Managing Director

Goulburn-Murray Water has announced the appointment of Steve Capewell as its next Managing Director, following an extensive and highly competitive recruitment process.

The organisation, Australia’s largest rural water corporation, plays a key role in delivering water services across northern Victoria, supporting irrigated agriculture, regional communities and environmental outcomes.

Dr Capewell will commence in the role on 6 July, bringing extensive executive leadership experience and a strong background across the water sector. He joins Goulburn-Murray Water from Goulburn Valley Water, where he has served as Managing Director for the past five and a half years. While both organisations operate in the same broader region, Goulburn Valley Water is primarily responsible for urban water and wastewater services, whereas Goulburn-Murray Water focuses on rural water delivery and irrigation systems.

Chair Justin Hanney said the Board was pleased to confirm the appointment. “Following a rigorous search process, the Board is confident that Steve is exceptionally well placed to lead Goulburn-Murray Water into its next chapter,” Mr Hanney said.

He added that Dr Capewell brings a strong understanding of the sector’s complexity, alongside a clear focus on outcomes and an appreciation of the workforce’s role in delivering services to communities, agriculture and the environment.

Dr Capewell welcomed the opportunity, noting both the challenges and opportunities facing the sector. “It’s an exciting time to lead Goulburn-Murray Water amid the challenges and opportunities facing the water sector. The organisation plays a vital role in supporting regional communities, and I look forward to working with the Board, staff, customers and stakeholders to build on its strong foundations,” he said.

His July start will enable a transition period ahead of the departure of current Managing Director Charmaine Quick at the end of the month.
