About the entity

Hunter Water is investing over AUD 30 million to upgrade key reservoirs across the Hunter region in New South Wales, in a move to bolster long-term water security and meet growing demand. The initiative spans six sites — Morisset, Arcadia Vale, Harpers Hill, The Hill in Newcastle, Cameron Park and West Wallsend, and North Lambton — and forms part of the utility’s broader asset renewal strategy.

“Each year, we carry out extensive works to maintain and extend the life of our infrastructure so we can continue delivering safe, reliable, and efficient water services. By refurbishing reservoirs that provide adequate water storage capacity, rather than replacing them, we’re ensuring a smart, cost-effective investment that benefits our customers now and into the future,” said Glen Robinson, Executive Manager Customer Delivery.

Among the largest projects is the replacement of the Harpers Hill Reservoir with a higher-capacity, more efficient facility, including a new pipeline to enhance transfer capability. Simultaneously, upgrades at the Morisset Reservoir are set to improve both capacity and reliability for the fast-expanding local population. Structural repairs, relining, and roof replacements at Arcadia Vale and other sites will further ensure water quality and longevity of service.

Heritage preservation is also a priority, with restoration underway at The Hill Reservoir in Newcastle. The historic brickwork is nearing completion, and full restoration of The Hill Reservoir No. 2 is expected by June, while conservation of the decommissioned No. 1 reservoir continues into 2025.

In Cameron Park, a new reservoir and pump station will replace ageing infrastructure, promising improved water pressure and resilience. North Lambton’s detention basin is also being upgraded for smoother operation.

Projects like this aren’t just about maintaining infrastructure. They’re about future-proofing our network and delivering value for money for our customers,” Robinson said. “We’re focused on making responsible investments that extend the life of our assets and provide long-term benefits to our customers.”
