About the entity

Icon Water has signed a long-term contract with a joint venture of Seymour Whyte and VINCI Construction Grand Projects (SWVJV) to deliver major projects, a landmark initiative to upgrade Canberra’s wastewater infrastructure and support the region’s growing population. The agreement will support Icon Water’s 10-year Major Projects Delivery Program, valued at AUD 1 billion.

The contract includes a project to design and build a new secondary treatment process at the Lower Molonglo Water Quality Control Centre (LMWQCC), Australia’s largest inland wastewater treatment facility. For this project, Icon Water and SWVJV will have the collaboration of design partner Beca HunterH2O.

Operational since the 1970s, the LMWQCC will be upgraded with a new membrane bioreactor capable of treating 97 million litres of wastewater daily, alongside advanced systems for pre-treatment screening, grit removal, chemical dosing, etc., according to press release issued by Seymour White.

“This first project will address both our immediate wastewater treatment asset needs, but with an eye on our future,” said Cameron Brown, Icon Water Acting General Manager Infrastructure Services. “By expanding our capacity and moving to newer treatment technologies, this major upgrade to the Lower Molonglo Water Quality Control Centre will help us build a sustainable wastewater legacy for our community.”

Sustainability is a core focus, with commitments to powering the site office using 100% renewable energy, reusing 90% of materials on-site, and employing 100% recycled water for construction activities. The project is expected to employ approximately 250 people at its peak, with an emphasis on engaging local talent.

“We are honoured to partner with Icon Water and our design partners Beca HunterH2O on this transformative project,” said John Kirkwood, Seymour Whyte Managing Director and CEO. “Working together with Icon Water, we aim to create infrastructure that serves today’s needs, while also supporting the future growth and sustainability of the Canberra community.”
