Technology company Itron has finished installing a smart water metering system for the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), the local government of Thane in western India, the company announced May 18.
The project, carried out with Itron's implementation partner Ceinsys Tech Ltd. (CS TECH Ai), pairs Itron's multi-jet turbine water meters with its meter data management platform, Temetra. According to Itron, the web-based system allows TMC staff to collect, upload and store consumption data, with the stated aim of identifying anomalies, reducing billing errors and supporting conservation efforts.
Itron, which trades on the Nasdaq under the ticker ITRI, said the deployment is intended to give the municipality clearer visibility into how water is used across the city and to flag irregularities that may indicate leaks or meter faults. The company said early results from the rollout include reductions in water loss and improvements in billing accuracy, though it did not release specific figures.
CS TECH Ai handled on-site implementation and integration with TMC's existing infrastructure.
Atul Kulkarni, executive engineer at TMC, said the project supports the municipality's broader goals of conserving water and improving service for residents. "We now have access to reliable meter data and digital insights that can help us advance our goals of conserving water and enhancing service delivery for the citizens of Thane," he said in a statement.
Don Reeves, senior vice president of outcomes at Itron, framed the deployment as a demonstration of how digital tools can be applied to urban water systems. Dr. Abhay Kimmatkar, managing director of CS TECH Ai, called the Thane rollout a "flagship project" for his firm and said it sets a benchmark for similar smart water initiatives in India.
Neither Itron nor TMC disclosed the financial terms of the contract or the total number of meters deployed.
