Kevin Young has been appointed as the new Chair of TasWater’s Board of Directors, succeeding Dr Stephen Gumley AO, who will step down in November 2024 after six years in the role. Young, a current board director, brings over 40 years of experience in the water and sewerage sector in Australia, having served as Managing Director of both Hunter Water Corporation and Sydney Water Corporation, Australia’s largest water utility.
“We’re confident Kevin is the perfect Chair to lead TasWater in the next phase of its journey to unlock water’s full potential for a thriving Tasmania,” said Chief Owners' Representative Wayne Johnston.
Young expressed his enthusiasm for the role, acknowledging the importance of TasWater’s mission during a pivotal time for water and sewerage services in Tasmania. He emphasized his commitment to delivering strong community, environmental, and economic outcomes for the state.
TasWater’s future strategy includes the delivery of an AUD 1.9 billion capital program over the next five years, aimed at enhancing water infrastructure, responding to climate change, and meeting customer expectations. Young highlighted the organisation’s largest-ever community engagement campaign, which will shape the next Price and Service Plan, due for submission in June 2025.
Dr Gumley reflected on his tenure, expressing pride in the completion of significant projects like the Bryn Estyn Water Treatment Plant, TasWater’s largest capital project to date. "I am pleased that as a state-based corporation TasWater continues to invest across the state to improve services to the many communities we serve," he said, and wished Young and the Board continued success “as they continue to build and foster a great future for water in Tasmania”.
