PUB appoints Jacobs to assess feasibility of dual-mode desalination plant in Singapore

Jacobs has been appointed by Singapore’s national water agency, PUB, to carry out a feasibility study for a potential new desalination plant, a project aimed at strengthening the city-state’s long-term water security strategy.

The study will evaluate possible approaches for developing a desalination facility in one of the world’s most space-constrained urban environments. Among the aspects under consideration are design concepts that make more efficient use of land, including the integration of treatment infrastructure within taller multi-storey developments or underground spaces.

In addition, the assessment will investigate the feasibility of a dual-mode plant capable of processing both seawater and freshwater. Such a configuration could provide greater operational flexibility and enhance the resilience of Singapore’s water supply under varying weather conditions.

As part of the assignment, Jacobs will deliver advisory and feasibility services covering conceptual design, evaluation of treatment technologies, construction methodologies, lifecycle cost analysis and risk assessment.

The new study further expands Jacobs’ longstanding collaboration with PUB. Over the years, the company has contributed to several major water and wastewater infrastructure projects in Singapore, including the Deep Tunnel Sewerage System, NEWater facilities, the Changi and Tuas Water Reclamation Plants, and the New Kranji Water Reclamation Plant.
