The Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority (SEWA) is moving forward with a major water conservation initiative aimed at improving water efficiency across the Emirate of Sharjah. The programme will see more than 750,000 water-saving devices installed in over 45,000 homes located throughout the emirate's cities and regions.
Implementation has begun in Al Rahmaniya district, where the authority plans to reach 4,015 homes. According to SEWA, installation work in the district is scheduled for completion by the end of July.
According to Majid Al Shamsi, Executive Director of Corporate Support at SEWA, the initiative forms part of the authority's broader strategy to support environmental sustainability while encouraging the responsible use of natural resources. He said SEWA has assigned more than 12 specialised technical teams and supplied the equipment, tools and operational resources required to carry out the project.
Rashid Al Marzouqi, Director of the Media and Communication Department at SEWA, outlined the implementation framework, which includes eight key components. These cover the preparation of a database of the targeted homes, budget allocation, development of an implementation schedule, assignment of specialised technical teams, communication with homeowners and obtaining approval for inspections and installations, installation of the devices, customer satisfaction surveys, and a final evaluation to quantify the savings achieved and produce a final project report.
Al Marzouqi also highlighted the results of earlier stages of the programme. He said 14,000 homes received more than 210,664 water- and electricity-saving devices during previous phases, which focused on beneficiaries of the Sharjah Social Services Department and recipients of the Sharjah inflation allowance. According to SEWA, these phases achieved a 62% reduction in water consumption and a 59% improvement in lighting rationalisation among participating households.
The latest phase expands the authority's ongoing efforts to promote efficient resource use while supporting sustainability objectives across residential communities in Sharjah.
