  • SUEZ awarded contract to upgrade Kochi City's Water Supply and Distribution Services

About the entity

The Kerala Water Authority (KWA), a state government-owned agency responsible for water supply and wastewater management in Kerala, has awarded a contract to SUEZ for the upgrade, operation, and maintenance of Kochi City’s water supply system. The project is part of the Kerala Urban Water Services Improvement Programme (KUWSIP) and is jointly funded by the Asian Development Bank and the Government of Kerala.

The contract aims to improve water production and distribution services in Kochi City, covering an area of approximately 95 square kilometers and serving nearly 700,000 residents. The scope includes 146,500 service connections and the replacement of the existing water distribution network. The initiative targets the provision of a continuous pressurized water supply (24 hours a day, 7 days a week) and seeks to reduce Non-Revenue Water losses to 20%, aligning with national service level benchmarks.

SUEZ will implement various technologies to support these goals, including remote meter reading for industrial and commercial users, a real-time operational performance monitoring system (RoPES), and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems. Responsibilities under the contract include daily operations, preventive and corrective maintenance, leak detection and repair, and customer service. The Kerala Water Authority will remain in charge of meter reading, billing, and revenue collection.

“This initiative is a step toward securing 24/7 access to safe and reliable drinking water for the people of Kochi. It reflects our commitment to improving everyday life through better water services,” said Mr. Jeevan Babu K. IAS, Managing Director, Kerala Water Authority (KWA).

Pierre Pauliac, Interim Co-CEO & Chief Operating Officer Water at SUEZ, stated: “SUEZ is proud to have won this contract with the Kerala Water Authority to enhance access to safe and high-quality water to the people of Kochi city. Water availability is a growing urban need in India, and we are committed to deploy innovative technologies to better monitor water production and distribution and prevent water losses. We thank the Kerala Water Authority for their trust which is a testament to SUEZ’s quality of services in India for the past five decades.”
