Singapore’s Johor River Waterworks is set to undergo a major ultraviolet (UV) disinfection system upgrade following the selection of Italian technology provider De Nora to support the refurbishment project.
Awarded by Flotech Controls, the contractor appointed by PUB, Singapore’s National Water Agency, the project will see the installation of De Nora’s Sentinel® UV technology equipped with upgraded electronic ballast systems. The Johor River Waterworks, located in Malaysia's Johor state and operated by PUB, is a key facility in Singapore's imported drinking water supply system.
The existing UV systems were commissioned in 2011 and have provided disinfection for more than a decade. As the equipment approached the latter stages of its operational life, PUB launched a tender process to either replace or refurbish the installation to ensure continued performance and reliability.
According to De Nora, Flotech Controls proposed a retrofit solution that would allow the existing infrastructure to be upgraded while addressing space limitations within the waterworks building. The project forms part of the company’s Sentinel® retrofit programme, which focuses on improving system performance while retaining core assets.
By reusing major components of the existing installation, the refurbishment approach is also expected to reduce material consumption, waste generation and the carbon footprint associated with the project compared with a full replacement.
Once completed, the upgraded UV systems are expected to provide improved operational efficiency, a smaller footprint and longer lamp life. Installation is scheduled for 2027.
