Vietnam's Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE) is set to enhance its water resources management through digital transformation, as reported by Vietnam News.
The 2024 plan focuses on operating an online system for monitoring approximately 600 licensed water projects, and developing digital maps to predict and alert for droughts and water shortages. This initiative aligns with international cooperation efforts and the enforcement of the Water Resources Law, emphasizing water security, efficient use, recycling, and restoration of degraded water sources.
Châu Trần Vĩnh, director of MoNRE's Water Resources Management Department, highlighted the department's commitment to drafting legal frameworks and assessments for managing the impacts of hydropower development, particularly in the Mekong River. A draft water source scenario is expected by early 2025, facilitating local water usage plans.

The department will also collaborate with the Pollution Control Department to approve the surface water quality management plan for various river basins.
Reflecting on 2023, MoNRE made significant progress, including the revision of the Water Resources Law. Vietnam, as the head of the ASEAN Working Group on Water Resources Management, actively participated in global and regional water conferences and initiatives.
Nguyễn Thị Thu Linh, Director General of the MRC Joint Committee for Việt Nam, reported on the committee's role in evaluating and developing cooperation plans for the Mekong-Lancang water resources. She emphasized the importance of strengthening international cooperation within the Mekong subregion, including organizing meetings and enhancing collaborations with Mekong riparian countries for strategic development and water project management.
Overall, this represents a significant step in Vietnam's journey towards advanced, digitalized water resource management, reflecting a commitment to sustainable water use and international collaboration in the Southeast Asian context.
