In partnership with its subsidiary Engineering General Consultants (EGC), SMEC has recently been awarded three projects to enhance key roads and water infrastructure in Pakistan. The outcomes of these projects will support economic growth and improve community development.
Mohmand Dam Hydropower Project
The Mohmand Dam is a multi-purpose concrete-faced rock-filled dam located on the Swat River, which has significant economic and ecological importance in Pakistan. The Swat River ecosystem supports many species of fish and migratory birds, and the river itself is vital source of water for irrigation, drinking and industrial use.
The scope of work includes detailed design review, engineering and construction design, supervision and contract management. The project also features additional quality, environment and resettlement aspects. Once completed in 2024, the dam will provide 740 MW of hydroelectricity, improved downstream flood control and irrigate approximately 15,000 acres of land.
SMEC, along with EGC as sub-consultants, are participating in the project as part of a joint venture.
Balochistan Water Resources Development Sector Project
The proposed Balochistan Water Resources Development Project is located in the Zhob and Mula river basins in Balochistan, the largest province in Pakistan. The arid climate and over-exploitation of water resources has restricted its agricultural development.
The project aims to raise farmers’ incomes with new irrigation infrastructure and better management of farms, and to improve capacity for sustainable water management in Balochistan.
Once complete, the project will increase agricultural production and income through improved irrigation infrastructure and watershed protection. Along with its joint venture partners, EGC will provide a range of consultancy services including feasibility studies and structures design, construction supervision and project implementation support to the Water and Power Development Authority of Pakistan (WAPDA).
