About the entity

Stantec
Stantec designs with community in mind—whether that's in engineering, architecture, energy, water, or project management.

Stantec, a leading global design and engineering firm, has been selected by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP) as part of the team delivering upgrades to the Wards Island Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) in New York City. The firm will provide design services during construction through project closeout.

The Wards Island WWTP has a design capacity of 275 million gallons per day, servicing over 1 million users. With a drainage area of more than 12,000 acres, the plant covers the western section of the Bronx and Manhattan’s Upper East Side.

Upgrades at Wards Island WWTP focus on the plant’s 39 Final Settling Tanks (FSTs), responsible for removing solids from wastewater. It is expected that upgrades to FSTs will ensure the treatment plant remains in a state of good repair for decades to come.

“Stantec is proud to support this project as part of a larger master service agreement program with the NYCDEP for professional engineering design support,” said Majid Javaheri, Stantec senior process engineer and technical project lead.

As part of Stantec’s role in the Wards Island WWTP project, the firm will support NYCDEP in overseeing design quality and compliance throughout construction and closeout. Stantec will also partner with the construction team for guidance on design specifications, change orders, equipment submittals, and construction plans. Construction is slated through 2021, with closeout anticipated by 2022.
