UN-Water coordinates the efforts of UN entities and international organizations working on water and sanitation issues.

Water experts from South America convened at the “Workshop to support the SDGs – Groundwater in the implementation of indicator 6.5.2” organized by UNESCO and UNECE along with other partners.

Held at the UNESCO Regional Office for Sciences in Latin America and the Caribbean, in Montevideo, the goal of the meeting was to share experiences and lessons learned on the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the South American region, with particular emphasis on integrated water resources management, including transboundary groundwater.

Indicator 6.5.2 tracks the percentage of transboundary basin area within a country that has an operational arrangement for water cooperation. An arrangement for water cooperation is a bilateral or multilateral treaty, convention, agreement or other formal arrangement between riparian countries that provides a framework for cooperation.
