The United Nations World Water Development Report 2025, entitled “Mountains and glaciers - Water towers”, was launched on 21 March at a joint celebration for World Water Day and the inaugural World Day for Glaciers.
The 2025 edition of UN-Water’s flagship annual report on water calls attention to the essential services and benefits mountain waters and alpine glaciers provide to societies, economies and the environment.
With a focus on the technical and policy responses required to improve water management in mountains, the report covers critical issues such as water supply and sanitation, climate change mitigation and adaptation, food and energy security, industry, disaster risk reduction and ecosystem protection.
“Mountains and glaciers - Water towers” was launched during a joint celebration for World Water Day and the first-ever World Day for Glaciers at United Nations headquarters in New York on 21 March, and was presented at a simultaneous high-level event at United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) headquarters in Paris.
Both events wereco-hosted by UNESCO and the World Meteorological Organization as co-coordinators of the World Water Day 2025 campaign Task Force.
The UN World Water Development Report is published by UNESCO on behalf of UN-Water and its production is coordinated by the UNESCO World Water Assessment Programme.
