Today, glaciers are melting faster than ever due to climate change.
For billions of people, meltwater flows are changing, causing floods, droughts, landslides and sea level rise. Countless communities and ecosystems are at risk of devastation.
Global reductions in carbon emissions and local strategies to adapt to shrinking glaciers are essential.
This year’s World Water Day campaign is about working together to put glacier preservation at the core of action plans to tackle climate change and the global water crisis.
World Water Day is a United Nations observance coordinated by UN-Water. This year’s Task Force of UN-Water Members and Partners is led by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and World Meteorological Organization (WMO).
UNESCO and WMO are also co-coordinators of the International Year of Glaciers' Preservation (2025), which initiates the start of the Decade of Action on Cryospheric Science (2025–2034).
The inaugural World Day for Glaciers will be celebrated at a joint event to mark World Water Day and the launch of the “United Nations World Water Development Report 2025: Mountains and Glaciers – Water Towers”, published by UNESCO on behalf of UN-Water, with its production coordinated by the UNESCO World Water Assessment Programme.
