Melbourne’s newest water corporation – Greater Western Water – came into effect on July 1, delivering better water services to 1.2 million people from the inner CBD to the fast-growing outer west regions.

Acting Minister for Water Richard Wynne welcomed the formal beginning of Greater Western Water after the integration of Western Water and City West Water.

The new corporation will support and grow regional jobs, consolidate $1.5 billion worth of investment over five years and serve one-fifth of Victoria’s population. Customers will also see reductions in average household water bills over coming years as a result of the integration.

Greater Western Water’s Sunbury office will be upgraded with funding of $500,000 to convert the office to a COVID-safe hub and accommodate 50 additional staff. All existing offices and depots will be retained, with no job losses.

Greater Western Water is well placed to meet the demand created by western and north western regions in Melbourne and beyond, with an existing base of 580,000 customers forecast to reach 690,000 by 2028.

The integration also means former Western Water areas will have the water security provided through the Melbourne system which is underpinned by the desalination plant.

Greater Western Water means better service, water security, regional job retention and lower bills for the 1.2
million people it serves.
This new water authority is part of our plan to ensure that Melbourne and regional communities are serviced byinfrastructure and authorities that are ready for the future.
I thank all the staff and Board members. and the transition committee chaired by Cheryl Batagol, on achieving a smooth transition to the new Greater Western Water.

Acting Minister for Water Richard Wynne

I’m delighted that customers in former Western Water areas can look forward to lower bills – and I also welcome work to upgrade and expand the Sunbury office.
