According to the UN, the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6 is to "Ensure the availability of water and its sustainable management and sanitation for all". The goals of this objective cover both aspects of the water cycle and sanitation systems, and the achievement of this goal has been set to contribute to the progress of other SDGs, mainly in health, education, economic growth and the environment.
Predictions predict a 50 percent increase in water consumption by 2020; it is estimated that 1.8 billion people will live in countries in regions with absolute water scarcity and that two-thirds of the world's population could then be immersed in water-stressed conditions.
