A key section of the webinar Ceramic Era: Water Filtration Redefined put ceramic ultrafiltration to the test across four very different water treatment contexts. Amrith Giridhar, Head of Applications at Cerafiltec, presented real deployments spanning groundwater, surface water, seawater and industrial wastewater, making the case that ceramics are no longer a technology reserved for the most challenging industrial applications.
Each case illustrated a specific problem that conventional pre-treatment had failed to solve. A drinking water plant in the Middle East had seen its RO system deteriorate due to iron and manganese in the well water source; ceramic's tolerance of upstream oxidation eliminated the replacements. A surface water plant expanded to 160 megalitres per day within its existing footprint, simultaneously addressing PFAS, colour and odour through Cerafiltec's active cake layer filtration process. A desalination operator in northern Africa replaced an entire multi-stage pre-treatment train with a single ceramic stage, solving persistent RO failure. And in a food and beverage membrane bioreactor in Poland, frequent polymeric membrane replacements that had accounted for the majority of filtration costs were eliminated entirely, with the installation since doubling in capacity.
Across all four examples, Giridhar's message was consistent: ceramic ultrafiltration simplifies the treatment process, reduces the pre-treatment burden, and changes the economics over the life of the asset.
